The Czech Geological Survey (CGS) is a state organization whose main mission is to perform the state geological service in the Czech Republic and related activities, as authorized by the Ministry of the Environment on the basis of Act No. 62/1988 Coll., On Geological Work. Its task is to collect and process data on the geological composition of the area, on the protection and use of mineral resources and groundwater and on geological risks, and provide them to the experts and the public and, in particular, to the administrative bodies to support political, economic and environmental decisions. The subject of activity is also oriented basic research, applied geological research and creation of basic, derived and special-purpose geological maps.

CGS vision is to become a pillar of the Czech state in providing geoscientific information for decision-making on natural resources, risks and sustainable development and, based on high expertise, to strengthen its position as a successful research institution in the field of Earth sciences. CGS research activities include research of the construction and development of the Earth's crust including modelling and visualization in 3D, research and use of natural resources, research of the geosphere-biosphere-atmosphere interaction, geological risk research, research and development of geochemical and mineralogical methods and development of geoinformatics. At present, the research activity of the CGS within the framework of wide international cooperation is coming to the fore.

Research activities related to informatics include technological and content development of the CGS geoinformation system. It is the main information base for the support of geological research and for the effective provision of relevant data and information for decision-making on natural resources, risks and sustainable development, as well as for the interpretation of geological and geophysical measurements and for further research in this field. Informatics is an undeniable integral part of most research projects, focused not only specifically on geoinformatics, but also on applied and regional geology in the Czech Republic and abroad.
