The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University is a highly respected faculty, which usually ranks among the best-rated scientific institutions in the Czech Republic. The faculty offers university and postgraduate studies in computer science, mathematics and physics. It also offers a bachelor's program for teachers of computer science, mathematics and physics. A characteristic feature of the faculty is the close connection between pedagogical activities and research work. The word "Matfyz", an abbreviated form of the name of the faculty in Czech, is considered a synonym for excellent results in science and education. Faculty graduates can be found in many leading companies (Facebook, Oracle, Generali, Ernst & Young) and at world-renowned universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Wyoming, Chicago, etc.).

The Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics has been a part of the CzechGeo/EPOS research infrastructure since the beginning (2010) thanks to its experience with building seismic stations in western Greece and long-term earthquake research. Thanks to long-term cooperation with the University of Patras (more than 20 years), we were able to build a unique seismic (PSLNET) and GNSS (PPGNET) networks that are part of the Corinth Rift Laboratory (CRL) and the Hellenic Unified Seismological Network (HUSN). The CRL is included in the NFO (Near Fault Observatory) within EPOS. In 2016, our partner in Athens (NOA, National Observatory of Athens) set up its own data portal (NOA EIDA Data Archives) and our data is available through it to a wide scientific community.

The Department of Geophysics also operates the Prague seismic station, which is part of the Czech regional network of stations and is the longest-running station in the Czech Republic (founded in 1924).
