Geomagnetic observatory Budkov and mobile equipment – GEOMAG

The national geomagnetic observatory is located at Budkov near Prachatice, at a place which is distant from sources of man-made disturbances of the geomagnetic field. Since 1996 the observatory meets the high international standards and is a certified observatory of the global network INTERMAGNET. The observatory is equipped with two digital fluxgate magnetometers and proton precession magnetometers. A set of Quartz variometers of Bobrov type was equipped by photosensors with feedback and put in operation in 2016. Data with 1-second and 1-minute sampling are automatically transmitted to INTERMAGNET. Continuous registration is weekly completed by absolute measurements of geomagnetic field carried out by CARL-ZEISS theodolite with single axis ferromagnetic sensor BARTINGTON.

Mobile equipment is used for magnetic survey. Basic geomagnetic network of 1st order was established and stabilized by granite corner stones around 1950 and took up the survey carried out since 1840th. The network consists of 199 points evenly distributed on the Czech territory. Since 1967 repeated (bi-annual) measurements were carried out on several selected points. The repeat station measurements are recently part of international MagNetE initiative, which coordinates the measurements across Europe to improve our knowledge about long term changes of geomagnetic field.
