PSLNET seismic network

PSLNET (Prague-Patras Seismological Network) is a regional seismic network in western Greece. It is part of the entire Greek seismological network of HUSN (Hellenic Unified Seismological Network) and CRL (Corinth Rift Laboratory) network. CRL is included in the NFO (Near Fault Observatory) within EPOS. The Department of Geophysics of the Charles University started deploying the seismic stations in 1997 thanks to obtaining the fundings for 3 modern broadband seismographs, which, at that time, expanded the network of short-period seismographs of the University of Patras. Over the years, PSLNET has grown to the current state of 8 broadband seismographs and 10 accelerographs, which are further supplemented by a network of permanent GPS stations (PPGNET). The data are freely accessible via the NOA EIDA data portal and serves the general scientific community for geophysical research in the area. Greece is one of the most seismically active areas in the world, and without earthquake research we will never come close to predicting earthquakes. However, there are early warning systems that already operate in developed countries (Japan, USA) with a dense infrastructure of seismic stations. Such systems can eliminate the consequences of devastating earthquakes. This goal is already achievable in case of the sustainability of the existing networks with their subsequent expansion.
