Local seismic network Male Karpaty MKNET

The region of Male Karpaty is an important seismogenic zone in the vicinity of the Czech-Slovak border. The strongest known earthquake with magnitude 5.7 occurred there in year 1906. Moreover, the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant is located in the area. The seismogenic zone is situated in a transient belt between the Eastern Alps and the Western Carpathians mountain ranges. The MKNET seismic network represents a useful tool for seismicity studies of the area. Data recorded by MKNET enable detailed identification of the seismogenic zone, the determination of earthquake focal mechanisms, and possibly to estimate the probable location, magnitude and mechanism of the strongest possible earthquake in the area. Such information will contribute greatly to a more accurate seismic hazard assessment.

The CzechGeo MKNET is a part of the local seismic network MKNET that monitors seismic activity in the Male Karpaty area. See the website for the map of location of MKNET seismic stations. Until 2011, the MKNET consisted of eleven seismic stations (red squares and triangles). In period 2011-2017 four new seismic stations were deployed (green triangles). An extension of another six seismic stations (purple triangles) is planned for the future. The seismic stations JALS, BAN, PODO and PULA are supported by CzechGeo. Data from these stations are available upon the request at czechgeo-mknet@irsm.cas.cz.
